Meanwhile, his wife earns additional income by stitching clothes in her spare time while managing domestic responsibilities, including caring for their children and maintaining the household.
The house is constructed entirely of chira bricks, corrugated sheets and concrete slabs. Upon entering, there is a veranda (बारोडा in Odia), followed by a corridor (साई) with a dividing wall that separates the two families. Other parts of the house include a shopfront (दोखणो), storage rooms (जिन्साघर), bedrooms (सोईबाघर), a kitchen (रसोईघर), a backyard (बारी), and washrooms (लाक्टिनी), which are located in the backyard.
The house has endured several challenges over the decades, including the cyclone of 2012. The storm caused significant structural damage, with parts of the roof and walls collapsing. During this time, the families were forced to leave their home and seek refuge in a government shelter near a local temple. The shelter provided basic amenities, including food, water, and medical assistance, helping the families recover during this period.
