The courtyard around a broken house
A fisherman weaves his net in the small extension that he added to his grandfather’s house, the place he now lives after his own home was washed away six months ago. Before dawn, at four in the morning, he and his neighbours prepare to head out to sea to catch fish for shipment to the harbour.
When they return with their catch, each man takes a small portion home for his family. In a courtyard formed around an abandoned house, the women clean the fish, laying some aside to dry. The rest is taken to the open kitchen, an extension of the house where it is cooked.
After feeding their daughter and eating her own meal, the woman throws the leftovers into the cracks along the coastline. Pigs gather to eat what they can, and whatever remains is carried away by the sea during the high tide at night.
