Fishing Settlement 

Weaver's Settlement 

Units

Uppada has its own set of locally specific terms used to describe the internal spaces of its built forms. As the settlement is primarily shaped by two dominant occupations weaving and fishing, the spatial organisation of houses reflects the distinct social, economic, and occupational needs of these communities. This glossary documents the local terminology used to identify and describe domestic spaces unique to each housing type.

In 1995, under the N. T. Rama Rao government, the site was formalised as a Shelter and Services Rehabilitation Scheme colony for the Backward Classes – Group B (BC-B) weaving community. 80 housing plots were laid out on formerly agricultural land acquired from local farmers and allotted equally among five weaving castes—Devang, Senapat, Padmashali, Pathshali, and Kakibathula. Each family received a three-cent plot measuring approximately 12.9 metres by 9 metres.

Marine Fish Survey of Uppada

The fish species listed below represent the varieties commonly caught along the coast of Uppada. While the majority of fishing occurs in nearshore waters, fishers occasionally operate in deeper zones, extending to depths of up to 200 metres. This analysis outlines the different fish species found in the waters around Uppada and identifies the typical sea depths at which they are caught.
