The ceramics module was conducted by Savia Mahagen, a contemporary artist who explores form-building in clay and various techniques of creating a ceramic body across different stages of the process. The module began with an introduction to the theoretical history of ceramics and its nuances across cultures and time periods. This foundation then led us to engage with the kind of work Savia practices and the questions she raises about form and technique within ceramics—an art form that has often become a largely utilitarian craft, with closely guarded methods of firing, glazing, and finishing.

We progressed through three primary stages: understanding and working with the material’s complexities and characteristics, exploring form-building, and finally, delving into the firing process. This experience allowed us to sharpen our understanding of material exploration and offered insight into the purity of an unburdened, organic artistic process.
