Case Studies for High Intensity Complex Urban Projects

1. Faculty Note:Technology Module, 7th Semester, 2018Week 1 – June 4th to June 8th

The first week of the 7th semester Technology module, titled High Intensity Complex Urban Projects, began with a series of introductory lectures to Building Bye-laws, Theory of Structures and Building Services -HVAC.

This module aims to develop an understanding of the technical and material challenges in assembling a mixed-use tall building. To examine and understand the intensities of flows of mater, things and people that the are experienced in the functioning of a tall building.

In the first week, along with the introductory lectures, students analysed thirteen case study projects which have something crucial, technically or conceptually, learning to offer in line with the theme of the module. The studies were carried in groups of three. The primary focus of these case studies was to analyse the structural system of these projects. Hence, it was encouraged to make models expressing the structural systems of the case study projects. ‘

Following were the Case Study Projects:

  1. TAIPEI PERFORMING ART CENTRE, TAIPEI, OMA.

  2. CCTV HEADQUARTERS, BEIJING, OMA

  3. SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY, OMA

  4. TRÈS GRANDE BIBLIOTHÈQUE, OMA

  5. AT&T PERFORMING ARTS CENTER DEE AND CHARLES WYLY THEATRE, DALLAS, TEXAS, REX & OMA

  6. NEW MUSEUM, NEW YORK, SANAA

  7. CLC & MSFL TOWERS, SHENZHEN, CHINA, REX

  8. SHRI RAM CENTRE, NEW DELHI, SHIVNATH PRASAD

  9. POMPIDOU CENTRE, RENZO PIANO, PARIS, RICHARD ROGERS &

  10. THE INTERLACE SINGAPORE – OMA

  11. THE BOW, CALGARY – NORMAN FOSTER

  12. VASHI STATION,

  13. TIMMERHUIS, ROTTERDAM, OMA

2. Student Notes:by Nirmohi Kathrecha, Fourth Year B Arch, 2018

The first week of the Technology module of Semester 7, 2018-19 mainly focuses on understanding structural systems that are employed and operated for the construction of high rise buildings and structures with distinctive construction methods. The fundamentals of how a structure supports itself, responds to the prerequisite functional or site conditions. 13 case studies were researched upon in order to draw a strong structural and constructive understanding from them.

Introduction to servicing multi story building,  building regulations -through the idea of congestion, simulation and excitement as the given metropolitan condition. These became the underlying guidelines to understand why the case studies were designed in a certain way. The study broadly included code analysis, site analysis and climatic analysis of the building.

To speak of the few cases; AT&T Performing Arts Centre Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre, Dallas, Texas was a study of a structural system assembled by six distinct shaped columns, a bell truss and shear wall. The Pompidou centre gave us an insight into how simple functional and conceptual decisions be vital in designing a structural system. The building was an example of revolutionizing how services in a building were placed. Placing circulation areas and services on the outside created an assembly of distinctive structural members that worked as a portico. The Bow Tower, Calgary by Norman Foster was an example of countering lateral forces through the façade, and an example of climatic analysis determining the profile of the building.

The case studies were paradigms in terms of comprehending different types of forces, load transfer, building services, functional necessities, details, climate, codes and by-laws and construction methods. The week terminated with making scaled structural models of every case study building by the students based on the research.
