Orientation

Group 1

Old man on whose nose

We were given the limerick of Edward Lear : The Old Man on whose nose. Individually, drawings had to be made by us, of the character in the limerick. The character chosen by us was the nose if the old man. After a few reviews of those drawings, we were then working together as a team to explore different forms of the nose, and how to show the motion of the birds. In our first iteration, the form of the nose was overshadowed by the intense motion of the birds. The second iteration had a very elongated and an explicit form for the nose. We then tried to co-operate the motion of the birds and the form of the nose and blend them together rather than having them look like separate pieces.

After this, we had to create a structure using a net, based  on what we had understood of the limerick and the drawings made by us. We wanted to capture the essence of the drawing and show it in the structure. Space and volumes were created in the structure by: folding the net at some places, pinching it,  hanging it from several points, lowered it at some points. To eventually make an inhabitable space. Through this module we learnt how the material behaves when subjected to different conditions and also how to portray a piece of writing as a drawing.

Group 2

Old man of the hague

During the orientation module we were asked to make smaller drawings which were then converted to larger drawings, Our group had initially made two drawings, one which focused on the texture and surface of the moon and the other was concentrating on a way to get to the moon. This compilation of ideas helped us learn how to work in a team and taught us how to combine each other idea’s and listen to everyone’s opinion and how people with different ideas manage to find common grounds to work on helping everyone's idea in being presented. It also enabled us to form a bond as a class and make new friends. Combining those ideas, we created a drawing of a massive pile of garbage, which ultimately led to the moon, trying to capture the man's passion for reaching the moon. From these drawings, we took the idea of stacking further. We first made toothpick models to understand how the idea of stacking works. We analysed various materials that we could utilize for stacking, which would make the structure inhabitable, stable, and strong. This search helped us learn how to choose the right material while also taking into consideration the cost and availability. We used the method of scaffolding to make this structure, in which we learnt the different types of knots that are used to tie a structure together and how it affects the stability of a structure and also understood how the load gets transferred in the scaffolding and how each member of the structure is important for it to be stable. Our goal was to demonstrate how the pile created a space for the observer to interact with. The structure's final height was 17.4 feet (5.3 m)

Group 3

Old person of mold

For a start, we were given a poem on Edward Lear (The was an old person of mole) In the poem, the man is wrapped in a quilt made of fluff and fur. We drew a picture of the cold and shivering, and we included a lot of bulges and hairiness to keep him snug and comfortable while shielding him from the cold. However, when we were building the model, we improved it and turned it into a surface that you can inhabit and feel comfortable in. As a result of the walrus' thick, fatty skin and our thorough observation of the animal, we came up with the concept of bulges throughout the sketching and idea generation process. We also explored different forms of bulges. We explored different forms and spaces for the soft sculpture landscape to inhabit the individual into the space, making him/her feel comfortable and cosy, the framework was challenging, and the initial stage was difficult because we had different ideas, but eventually we came to a final choice that made our model stand out. Our team efforts were remarkable, though we had a difference of opinion, but we gradually came to a decision and levelled up our soft sculpture. We made an effort to adhere to various stages of development, incorporate group members' thoughts, and follow the proper course, all of which enhanced our model. In addition, we looked for the ideal material for the model. Our objective was to make the person feel safe and comfortable when inhabiting the space.

Group 4

Old man of marseilles

In the orientation module we were initially asked to make drawings of what ever questions we had and after that we were divided into 6 different groups with one poem for each group.

We made understood the poem and then drew whatever we as an individual understood from the poem. Some of us had similarities in our drawing, so later we made drawing together as a group.

Later we made installations of our drawing. Each group had a great exposure to different materials and even if all of us had different groups we still helped each other where ever it was needed. It was fun in this module.

Group 5

Old person of leeds

In Orientation Module we were given limericks by Edward Lear, We started with the drawings by imagining and drawing the first image that came in our mind . We drew individual drawings with an old lady sitting on a stool eating the desert in her hand and her head getting infested with beads. As we developed the understanding  about the poem, we focused more on the infestation part  and developed a drawing based on this idea. We tried to show how big and bulky the infestation has grown with the beads layering the mass and also how the infestation has taken over the whole body and nobody exists, and it is just a big bulky beads infestation with layers and depths. Then we tried to put up the concept of deformity in our structure. We directed our design first in a more decorative style of using paper, but then what clicked was making it structural by creating convex bulges. The fundamental of any sort of infestation is deformation, whether it be weathering of books or infestation in living things resulting in symptoms such as boils, sours, and textures etc. The unique thing about this structure is that it’s made of only one element, that is metal wires. From the very beginning, we decided to create a basic foundation of thicker wire that could hold its curvature, and created a grid that stayed upright alongside the pillar. This was followed by layering weaves on the large sections which was essentially to show an endless movement and a column that was once stiff and upright was now deformed , uneven and severely unpleasant to feel and see, just like a body infested.

GROUP 6

Old man with a beard Beard

In the orientation module, we were divided into six groups according to the six limericks by Edward Lear. “There was an Old Man with a beard.”

We started with making small drawings of what we thought that the old man would look like with a long beard with birds resting on it.

Soon after days of individually drawing, as a group we made a huge drawing illustrating our imagination of the limerick.

After this, we had to make a 1:1 structure of the drawing we made. Our main objective while making the structure was to show space; how the birds inhabit themselves in the beard.

We chose Coir ropes for our beard, as it suited the best to show density and space. While building the structure, we struggled figuring out how these ropes should be kept to achieve the feeling of home.

It was a tough one week as neither of us were handy with the ropes, but throughout the process it became easier for us.

The whole journey of 2 weeks from drawing in A4 sheets to building a real size structure, we enjoyed every moment of it.
