SEA Student Photographs selected for NIP Exhibition

Photographing Light

Two photographs of Vaishnavi Bhartiya from third year B Arch at SEA were selected by the National Institute of Photography (NIP, Dadar, Mumbai) for a public exhibition organized to celebrate the World Photography Day (19th August) and the founding day of NIP (20th August), during  24th August – 26th August 2018.

The NIP started about 30 years ago, and is one of the first photography institutes in India. It conducts an annual photography competition – Clairvoyance to provide a platform to upcoming student-photographers to showcase their talent. Here, students submit their entries across various genres of photography being landscape, portrait, fashion, light painting, black and white, architecture, wildlife, etc.

Amongst an average of about  2600 entries per year Vaishnavi’s selected photographs explored Astro-Landscape and light painting. Vaishnavi explains, “Both of my selected photographs were a bit more challenging since they do not fall into conventional daylight photography. One has to very choose the time of the year, and location very specifically. For such genre, one requires pitch dark background with completely clear sky. The location has to be on a high altitude in order to avoid the interference of light pollution that exists in the lower altitude.”

The blur in Vaishnavi’s photographs explore movement and light playfully and capture them in choreographed settings. The long exposure in low light has enabled her to capture the phenomenon of dispersion of light in atmosphere. The photograph with Buddha facing the sky has captured the stars in a slight blur, a direct result of movement of our planet. At the same time, the hazy sky in her photograph is a trace of galaxial stardust scattered across the sky.

Bhartiya concludes: “An exhibition helps tremendously in self learning, since people from different backgrounds come and share their views on your photos. Even I never realised the minute details which the photo had until they pointed it out. I got to learn a lot from interacting with other photographers whose photos were exhibited alongside mine.”
