And The Alley She Whitewashed in Light Blue

By: Nili Portugali

-Aditya Bhoite

The film centers on Nili Portugali's profound exploration of the concept of home, intricately woven into the fabric of her memories in the sacred town of Tsefat, Israel. Here, her grandmother's remarkable endeavor unfolds as she purchases a school, transforming it into a hotel that not only provides accommodation but also becomes the very space where she resides. This unique transformation adds an extra layer to the narrative, symbolizing the fusion of personal and communal elements within the physical space, making it an integral part of Nili's intricate journey.

Nili's reminiscences are triggered by recollections of her grandmother, and the fleeting moments they shared. As the narrative unfolds, the physical space of home gradually takes shape, intricately molded by the grandmother's routines. The film masterfully captures the essence of Nili's lived experiences, wherein the tangible and metaphysical aspects of home intertwine, creating a poignant portrayal of the enduring impact of familial bonds on one's sense of belonging.

The film's distinctive filming style imparts an almost dreamlike quality to the narrative. The subtle incorporation of these low angles skillfully heightens our awareness of experiencing the world through the eyes of a child, enriching the storytelling with a unique visual language.

Nili's diverse background in science and Buddhist teachings subtly manifests in the film through metaphors exploring the themes of birth, life, and daily routines. Intriguingly, she draws connections between contemporary activities and those performed by her grandmother, Rivka, particularly in the kitchen. For instance, the act of kneading dough metamorphoses into a symbolic representation of embryo formation. These parallel connections introduce a captivating interplay of objects, blurring the lines between the mundane and profound, as Nili endeavors to illuminate profound concepts of life within the film.
