Chair Design

Studio Co-Ordinator:- Sunil Jhambulkar and Pawan Vishwakarma

The course aimed to enable students to think about anthropometry, materiality and function for furniture design, chair design to be specific. The task was to design and make a chair in wood using wood joineries only. The design process involved sketches to figure out the form , a Digital 3D model to figure out the wood section sizes and work out basic ergonomics of the design. Next step was to make a scaled model to understand wood joineries for the design. Every step was an  attempt to resolve the design as much as possible before making  the full scale chair.

Next step was to procure wood for the chair and involved visiting sawmills located in city outskirts like Vasai and Nallasopara. Students then spent long hours in the workshop, learnt to operate different machines and tweaked the design as along the way they figured out the limitation of the material strength and workability. Each student designed and made chairs for a different function so the course outcomes varied in all shapes and sizes. Some had storage, some were rocking chairs , some lounge or some for very specific functions like playing a harmonium. During the course students developed capacities for various aspects for furniture design. Also the realization for the sheer amount of physical labor that goes into making and different kinds of skills required to work with such material and how it is taken for granted largely.
