Sound Diary
In the Navelim region of the Divar Island, Goa, the soundscape transforms as the day proceeds. Each morning, the island awakens to a harmonious blend of chirping birds, the distinct honks of pav hawkers, the gentle rolling of wheels on quiet settlement streets and the water flowing through the sluice gate. As the day unfolds, the landscape resonates with the sounds of the routines of the everyday—sweeping of the ‘aangan’, breakfast preparations, and the distant echoes of cattle and barking dogs, creating a lively mix of sounds. The afternoon brings silence to the area near the settlement as the residents of the settlements rest in the afternoon. However, the soundscape remains alive, marked by the distant sound of water sports and the speedboats near the sluice gate, offering an obvious contrast to the quiet settlement. Meanwhile, the distant sound of passing trains and its honking adds a dynamic layer to the island's soundscape. In the evening, the natural and human sounds come back to life, forming a melodious atmosphere.

Sound of each activity and the natural sources on the site have been recorded from the points that are marked out. The thumbnails below are linked to sounds recorded at that particular time.(click on the red circles to listen to the sounds that were recorded on site). The sounds not only change intensities at various time slots, but also change with respect to the other sounds overlapping in that spot. These variations in sound help in generating the landscape. The words that are mentioned under each point heading are associational terms that describe the space spatially, experientially and in terms of how the space is being used.
