Course Outline

The South Asian Architecture and Urbanism course at SEA is a two-week, intense course that aims to develop conceptualizations of architecture in the region. The course begins with discussing the problems with present historiographies of South Asian Architecture and Urbanism and goes on to develop conceptual categories through which a new critical understanding of architecture and urbanism in South Asia may be formulated.

Diagramming existing case studies, evaluating them, and conceptualising space and form

Exercise and Output

Through one conceptual term, discuss one architectural project in South Asia with its spatial configuration, its spatial affordances, material assemblies, and contemporary relevance in terms of spatial justice. The students will be evaluated based on their ability to read a building and analyse it spatial for its conceptual working. Use original drawings and diagrams for the analysis. 

 

Output: A 1000-word essay on the selected project / practice.
