Sonshi Mining Region,
Goa
This settlement study investigated the transformations caused due to intensive iron ore extraction in a small settlement in Sonshi, Goa, which is inhabited by indigenous and migrant communities. The terrain here transitioned from a primarily subsistence driven landscape to one intensively extracting iron ore over a period of hundred years. This transition changed the manner in which humans inhabited and then engaged with land as a resource. The primary investigations revealed that the previously operational mines in the area now lay dormant, offering new opportunities for their utilization. The study thus meticulously cataloged the impact of these alterations on habitation, the local flora and fauna, as well as their wider environmental implications. Throughout the study, four key questions served as the foundation for the fieldwork, focusing on three distinct time periods: pre-mining, during mining, and post-mining. Different methods of drawing and thus engaging with the landscape of Sonshi were explored that helped in understanding and posing pertinent questions around altered value systems, altered ecosystems and resources.
