The settlement study of the old city of Kannauj in the Ganges plains looks closely at its urban form along with the market street, the house types, a local temple type with flanking houses and the perfumeries that evolved in the area. It also documents newer perfumeries that have now evolved in the outer agricultural areas which were converted for this purpose. In doing so the study departs from fragmented studies of monuments and houses in studying historical architecture, to understand the cultural life that was afforded by builtform in the region.
