The study of Jaisalmer aimed at understanding the development of the city through the inter-relationships of its historical services and systems, while tracing their historical development. It studied settlement patterns  and cultural practices and their relationship with environment, resources, and technology. The study closely analyzed the impact of new technologies and other developments on the dynamics of cultural, resource, and built-form relationships within the city with an emphasis on architecture, materiality, and detail. It looked at the shifting relationship between old and new technology and their effects on culture in the region.
