Cities can be approached in many ways. One may begin with its monuments, its plans, its infrastructure, or its history. The study of Hyderabad was a part of the course "Urban Space and Form" that engaged with the urban as a dynamic field shaped by the interaction of multiple forces and rhythms, rather than as a product of built form, infrastructure, or governance alone. The information collected during the study emerges from an engagement with Hyderabad that looks at observations over explanations. They do not represent the city in its entirety or resolve its complexities. Instead, they offer fragments, readings, and interventions that reveal the city as a living, evolving condition shaped by everyday negotiations, relationships, and practices.
The inquiry began with secondary research, using maps, archives, films, newspapers, literature, reports, and historical accounts to develop preliminary readings of Hyderabad. Over three days of immersion in Hyderabad, each group engaged with one of eight sites across Hyderabad through walking, observing, sketching, mapping, photographing, recording, conversing, and simply spending time. Primary engagement became the principal method of understanding the city, allowing its forces, rhythms, networks, and everyday practices to emerge through sustained presence.
The observations gathered during the immersion formed the basis for individual interventions. Each proposal evolved from the conditions encountered on site. The resulting interventions are spatial, social, cultural, and representational, reflecting different ways in which spatial architectural practice can engage with the city beyond the production of buildings.
