Coimbatore,
Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore is an important industrial city and a major city in the state of Tamil Nadu. Located along the banks of the Noyyal River, Coimbatore is an ecology of large lakes distributed across the city. The urban region of Coimbatore is defined on the west by the presence of the Western Ghats and shares a border with Kerala. Being one of the most urbanized urban regions, after Chennai, Coimbatore is historically known for its industries - particularly wet grinders and textiles. IT and related industries are increasingly becoming important contributors to the economy of the city. Hence, the study not only focuses on the urban interventions across the city but also looks at the aspects of tribal settlements, labor housing, and accommodations for student and retirement communities. The study also looks at strategies that shape the organization of the slum areas, or make provisions for the non-state-planned industrial areas, which form a crucial part of the emerging urban interventions.
