Material Sense

Aashumi Shah

The technology module of the third semester involves an understanding of material behavior. The studio began by working hands-on with concrete. Through the process which was followed, first a mixture was created and poured into moulds of different kinds and materials. In working with concrete directly, the ratio of water to cement and continuous mixing allowed for the understanding of how the viscosity of concrete matters with different kinds of moulds. Further, hands-on interaction and experimentation with the material aided in the understanding of how it could be possibly used on a larger scale, and how time, water and the moulds are essential factors in making and using the material.

Post this, a single cube of concrete was made in order to be conscious of the finishing and preparation required in creating a mould. To follow this through, various moulds with geometric elements were then created within a framework of given proportions. This was important because for the creation of the moulds, an awareness of how negative space functions was needed for the eventual form to be what it was imagined to be and this helped to develop spatial understanding skills. Micro-concrete, pigments, and textures were also part of the experimentation as they gave different results from that of what was done previously. As part of the process, an awareness of the plasticity and strength of concrete was developed.

The blocks were sanded, cured and cleaned and to conclude, the blocks made by the entire class which were were composed together as an amalgamation of sorts, in order to create a collage of interconnected forms.

This course was conducted by Milind Mahale and Samir Raut, assisted by Chinmay Chidore.
