The specialisation course of street design undertaken by Urban Centre Mumbai looked at retrofitting and developing new design strategies for some of the important streets in Borivali.
Site visits to understand the spatiality of the streets with the help of vehicular and pedestrian movement; further learnings included methods of drawing, the Kevin Lynch survey, and figure-ground to hold the streetscape. Referring to the DP reservation to get a sense of where the design can intervene.
Multiple design proposals were identified considering government regulations and affordances for the public. References of work done by UCM and guest lecturer Mr Sudarshan Shirsath, SE, heritage cell, BMC. Opening up ways in which streets are trying to be designed in similar settings.
Acquiring knowledge about some standards of designing, questioning the larger idea of the public realms in the city. The course allowed thinking about the streets on which we commute daily. The proposals were depicted through plans and before-and-after visuals of the street views, giving a clear idea of how the street would serve after being redesigned. The site study and design proposals were then finally compiled into a book. The decision to alter the streets according to the needs of the public, more than the set regulations of the authority, was discussed and looked into.
The course ended with a lecture by Sujata Hingorani on architecture, streetscapes, and public realm design, showing some of her works around the cities in India.
