The study was intiated through talks with different members of te family or a household, learning about their life and understanding their aspirations. Along with these we documented the homes and made measured drawings of the said houses.
Dholiya House
The Dholiya family migrated to Mumbai in 1970. At that time it was just Ramesh and Mamta Dholiya, who in hopes of having a better life settled in the Thakkar Bappa colony leaving their three sons back in Rajasthan. The Dholiya used to live in a wood frame GI-covered home back then but had to shift to a more pakka ghar when Sohan (their eldest son) also came to Mumbai along with Manju in 2001. At that time, every house member was in the shoe-making business where the Dholiya was responsible for making and sticking soles to a shoe or sandal.
In 2010 the second eldest son of Ramesh and Mamta, Kishor, and his wife Shalu came to Mumbai and that was when the family made a first floor for the new couple and added another mori with a shared water tank. Kishor and Shalu never had any ambition of having a kid saying they won't be able to support a kid. At the same time, due to old age, Ramesh passed away, and Mamta shifted back to Rajasthan where her youngest son Manoj was completing his graduation. Manoj had an ambition of doing some blue-collar job after completing his studies in Mumbai.
In 2017 when Manoj and his wife Sonam migrated to Mumbai in hopes of finding a stable job and home they had to join the shoe-making business due to being able to find a job.
